Since January 2024, Gherzi Germany, Chemnitz, has been working specifically on solutions to support structural change in the automotive region of south-west Saxony as part of the CarTexSax 2024 project.
Funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Saxony as part of the Initiative Transformation Automobilregion Südwestsachsen (ITAS), the focus is on the strategic reorientation of the regional textile industry — towards becoming an innovative supplier for the changing European automotive industry.
Central topics of the project are globalisation 2.0, digitalisation, decarbonisation, autonomous mobility and the changing supply chain structures (tier structure). The focus is also on approaches to the circular economy and the recyclability of value streams — in line with the requirements of business, consumers and politics.
Southwest Saxony is caught between the poles of profound technological upheaval, shifting global supply chains and increasingly intense international competition. At the same time, the region harbours enormous potential: the existing textile expertise in production, supply chain and certification can be specifically linked with the requirements of the mobility of the future.
In the first few months of the project, Gherzi Germany carried out a comprehensive survey of the regional industry landscape. Relevant players from industry, research and politics were actively involved through interviews and events. Initial strategic foundations were developed from this. The aim is to create sustainable prospects for the textile industry in south-west Saxony — so that it can continue to play a key role in automotive value chains, secure jobs and maintain entrepreneurial structures in the future.
With Vision 2030, Gherzi Germany is pursuing the goal of transforming south-west Saxony into a leading European location for textile automotive solutions. At the same time, new industries are also to be addressed, as it is clearly foreseeable that the automotive industry — due to falling sales figures — will consolidate its capacities in Europe.
All of this is intended to create the basis for a resilient, future-orientated industry in south-west Saxony.
